Hey GuineaGang,

But don't worry. GuineaDad is here to help. Whether you’re getting acquainted with a new pet, or trying to encourage a shy one to feel more at ease around you, this easy three-step process can work wonders in building trust between you and your piggies.

Now for this short and simple yet helpful process.

Learn how to bond with a guinea pig!

Step 1: You want to start out by carefully getting into your piggy's cage and having a seat. We highly recommend spot cleaning their enclosure beforehand (for obvious reasons!)!

Step 2: Make yourself comfortable. Ideally, you'll want to sit in your guinea pig's cage for a while to increase familiarity and bonding with your pet. We recommend at least 20 minutes to allow them to become accustomed to your odor and physical presence sharing their space. Be sure to move slowly when finding a comfortable position and don't make any loud noises. You don't want to startle them!

Step 3: Don't touch your piggies! No matter how much they rub against your legs, crawl on top of you, or even pee or poo on you (which they may do), do not touch them! You want to let your guinea pigs know that you're able to safely share their space without needing anything from them. Guinea pigs can be shy and sensitive creatures, so letting them know they can walk around you freely, without always being touched or reached for, will help put them at ease whenever they're around you.

For a shy and vulnerable creature, knowing they can be fully relaxed in your presence can make a profound difference to your relationship. This can be likened to the difference between a casual friend and a family member. The added comfort and trust this will build is likely to result in an all-together happier and less stressed guinea pig, and they'll start to view you as a member of their inside circle.

Bonding with your guinea pig is so much fun!

See how Peanut, Tofu, and Dumpling are all playing around? This is a wonderful sign of total trust and comfort. We recommend using a blanket to allow your piggies to burrow - something piggies everywhere love to do! As stated before, do not touch them. Just let them approach you!

When you're finished, you may notice a lot of little poos. This is a good sign! Piggies tend to do their business wherever they feel safe and comfortable, meaning that they felt safe around you!
