How to introduce new foods to your guinea pigs - Hay

Hey there, GuineaGang!

Check out this video for a quick and fun summary!

Are you a new piggy parent or looking to try out some new hay with your guinea pig? Well, look no further! We've got some tips on how to introduce new hay to your furry little friend.

First, it's important to know what to feed your guinea pig.

They need an unlimited amount of hay, a small amount of pellets, fresh veggies and fruits, and plenty of water. Hay should be the largest part of their diet, as it helps with digestion and teeth maintenance.

If you want to try a new type of hay, leave your current hay and add the new type next to it - instead of removing the current hay all together. Allow them some time to become familiar with the new hay - ideally, give them one to two weeks to try it out before making a final decision. Keep in mind that some guinea pigs may need even more time to show interest in the new hay.

Another tip is to make sure the hay you're providing is fresh and of good quality.

You can check the freshness by looking for a green color and a fresh smell. Also, make sure to store the hay in a dry and cool place to avoid spoilage.

When it comes to the amount of hay, make sure to provide enough for your guinea pig to eat throughout the day. As mentioned earlier, hay should make up the largest portion of their diet.

If you notice that your guinea pig is not eating the new hay, don't worry. It may take some time for them to adjust to the new texture and taste. However, if they still refuse to eat it after a few weeks, it may be time to try a different type of hay.

It's also important to note that hay is not just for eating. Guinea pigs love to burrow and play in it as well. Providing them with a hay box or hay rack not only helps keep the hay clean but also provides them with a fun activity.

To prevent hay from getting soiled and minimize waste, consider using GuineaDad Hay Box and Hay Bar. They allow you to provide hay in a clean and efficient manner, reducing the chances of it being soiled and minimizing unnecessary waste.

Hay

In addition to hay, it's crucial to provide your guinea pig with fresh water at all times. Make sure to change their water daily and provide it in a clean water bottle or bowl.

Introducing new hay to your guinea pig can be a fun and rewarding experience. Remember to take it slow and provide them with enough time to adjust to the new hay. Also, make sure to provide fresh and good quality hay, along with clean water, and a fun activity to keep your guinea pig healthy and happy.

Hi Guinea Dad!
I’ve been using your liners for quite a while and love them! But this comment is about your hay. It has been a life saver! My youngest girl Sophie has been diagnosed with allergies. The vet said it was probobly due to hay dust. Upon switching to your hay Sophie’s stuffy sounding nose completely disappearered! The hay is always so green and fragrent. I can’t thank you enough! ( And Sophie too!😊❤️)
Sincerely,
Sandy
